Agile Project Management for Small Businesses Featured

While traditional Project Management has its own benefits for larger projects, they may not be very attractive to smaller businesses or smaller projects. Traditional Project Management is less flexible in its approach and has large overheads which may not be beneficial for smaller projects wherein the time spend for planning cannot be too long, as it leads to high overhead and the benefits of such projects are not realized.

 On the other hand, Agile Project Management has its obvious benefits, some of these are:

  • smaller, cross-functional team size (5-9 people)
  • very flexible  (encourages change rather than following a plan)
  • quick delivery (short period of 1-4 weeks)
  • interactive (direct involvement of all stakeholders)

These benefits go really well with small teams or teams managing smaller projects. Small businesses often have lot of small projects going on all the time. However, most smaller businesses do not have dedicated Project Managers to manage their projects, thus these Project Managers may be performing certain daily operations along with managing their projects. In Agile projects the Project Manager is not burdened with all the responsibility of managing scope, cost, time, quality, risk, and more. Instead some of these responsibilities are dealt with different roles such as the Product Manager and other agile roles. This also means that Agile Project Management relies a lot on the team's ability to self-organize.
